About 100 taxis in the capital of the United States, Washington DC will run around with #FreeKarachi banners. The aim was to make aware the world about the plight of Mohajirs in Karachi and convey the message to the USA for taking necessary steps. This is the second phase'>phase of the campaign which started after 1 phase on 15th Jan 2018 i.e. on Dr Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
When Pakistan and India became independent in 1947, Karachi was declared the capital city of Pakistan. As announced at the time of partition of India and Pakistan, many Muslims originating from India started to settle here. And these migrant Muslims are known as Mohajirs in Pakistan. In 1947, Karachi's population was mere few thousands but soon became the 3rd most populous city in the world. Trade, industries, banks, companies, etc. started to prosper and till date, Karachi is dominated by Mohajirs. Pakistan's 70% economy'>economy is dependent on the taxes collected from this region. However, when it's come to rights and opportunities for the people (Mohajirs) of Karachi, it is the most neglected city in Pakistan. They can't have jobs in government administrations, police, military, etc. and even youth are denied to have admissions in colleges; preference is given to native Muslims residing in Pakistan before the times of independence. Since 1992, many have been killed and missing, too. These led to the movement called #FreeKarachi. Nadeem Nusrat, the US-based former convener of Muhair's mainstream political party, Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM)said, "We want Karachi free from the control of Islamabad. We want Karachi to be free from atrocities of the security forces. We want an immediate end to the human rights violations of the people of Karachi." Pakistan Military and Government is not just looting Karachi but making it a safe haven for Jihadists (terrorists), as per some experts.
Did you know that USA - when under the British Colonial Forces during the 16th century - went through exactly the same scenarios and conditions? History is repeating and this time in Karachi.
