More than 100 child health experts in United States of America , some belonging to ACLU of Massachusetts, Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood, and Centre for Child Honouring have written an open letter to Mark Zuckerberg. This letter, dated 30th January 2018 has asked Mark Zuckerberg to withdraw'>withdraw the Messenger Kids app launched in December'18. According to them, this app hampers the healthy development of kids.

Understand
behind the news

An Open Letter is a letter written to a person or a group of people asking for clarifications, answers, a point of view, etc. or sometimes expressing objections too. An open letter written to CEO of Facebook, by 100s of Child-Health experts expressed their objection to Messenger Kids app and also demanded to discontinue it. According to 100s of Child-Health experts, this new app affects the growth of a kid. They believe so as kids below 13 may not know how to handle interactions with people online. And secondly, children under the age of 13 are too young to understand what kind of information is being collected from them. Most concerning point is that it will increase the time kids are spending with digital devices- looking for irrelevant and unnecessary information; when they should be devoting their time to learn fundamental knowledge, and acquire various skills like reading, playing, thinking, etc.

beyond the news

Did you know that Chamath Palihapitiya, a former Facebook executive has also justified that social media is interfering with kids' growth, in November last year? Sean Parker, the former Facebook president has also commented on something similar. All these comments indicate that social media is not good for children. If it was an open letter by a single person then it could have been neglected. But when 100s of people and that too Child Health Experts, write something, then at least we can hope it will get the right attention of facebook engineers.
